“‘The Partner Actor Lee Plays Flirty Lawyer”

Posted in Lee Dong Wook, korean actor with tags , , , on July 1, 2009 by gebens2001

Heartthrob actor Lee Dong-wook has made a comeback in a new drama series as a playful and snobbish lawyer. In his last drama, “Sweet Life,” his melancholy character had melted the hearts of women viewers

In an interview during the premiere presentation of the new KBS2 Wednesday-Thursday series “The Partner,” Lee–the lead actor–said, “We are filming intensely. I will do my absolute best.”

The character he plays is the flirtatious and cynical lawyer Lee Tae-jo. Lee jokingly said, “Being flirtatious is the complete opposite of my real self so portraying that aspect is painful.” He was also upbeat about his less serious and heavy role in the new drama.

Lee said, “‘My Girl’ was super popular and ‘Sweet Life’ was more of a quality character series. ‘The Partner’ is somewhere between the two. It doesn’t center on one big story but has a central plot and sub episodes. It can’t be boring.”

Director Hwang Eui-kyung praised Lee for beautifully acting out his character, a person of both logic and passion whose heart is “like a desert that cannot be filled by whatever means.”

Playing opposite actress Kim Hyeon-joo, Lee is expected to show a comical, arrogant and flirty side of his TV persona.

“The Partner” first aired on June 24 on KBS2.

“Girls’ Generation Poised to Break Own Record with 2nd Mini-album”

Posted in Girls Generation, korean pop with tags , , on June 26, 2009 by gebens2001

The nine-member girl-band Girls Generation soared to stardom early this year with its song “Gee.” In an interview that was held June 22, the Girls’ Generation members spoke about how their popularity has changed their lives. All nine of them have been invited to appear on popular variety shows that further boosted their popularity. But there was a downside as well: fatigue from tight schedules. Hyo-yeon says she was surprised to learn that even elderly people recognized her on the street. Parodies of “Gee” were shown on innumerable shows while magazines introduced Girls’ Generation’s fashion and makeup styles.

Youn-a says she saw several photos of Girls’ Generation in a single magazine and that her photo was published in the “Horoscope Stars of the Year” section. In the military, there is even a joke that soldiers who join the army with several autographs of Girls’ Generation members are guaranteed good treatment for two years. The band members say their stylists receive one day off whenever they get their autographs and that they gave their autographs innumerable times to soldiers. They added jokingly that singer Kang Ta, who is currently serving in the military, was happy to get their autograph and is now treated with “all due respect” in the military.

girls gen01Girls’ Generation, whose song “Gee” topped music charts for nine straight weeks, is now back with their second mini-album entitled “Tell Me Your Wish.” The title song of the album topped Mnet.com and finished second on Cyworld Music just one day after its release on June 22. It is poised to become the group’s sixth hit after “Into The New World,” “Girls’ generation,” “Baby Baby,” “Kissing You” and “Gee.” “Tell Me Your Wish,” which begins with the members chatting about their trip, sends a message of hope to people who are exhausted by mundane life. Unlike “Gee,” which was written as a “hook song” with a repetitive chorus, this song has diverse rhythm patterns and sophisticated sounds.

The album contains songs from diverse genres, such as the ballad duet song “One Year Later” performed by Jessica and Onew of SHINee, the refreshing euro-dance song “Etude,” the retro-style remix of the song “Girlfriend” and the cute song “Boyfriend,” about a girl who has a crush on a boy.

The Girls’ Generation members say they feel pressured to maintain their popularity despite the deluge of girl bands on the K-pop scene, such as 2NE1, After School, Brown-eyed Girls, 4minute and Tiara. Soo-young and Sunny said, “I saw 2NE1 and 4minute performing on stage. Their songs are very exciting and their costumes were gorgeous. I’m worried that our new military-style costumes might look less attractive. We’re pressured to top music charts again after the success of ‘Gee’ and we do want to break our own record.” Soo-young added, “I hope that the lyrics of ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ will become a popular catchphrase among people who need a boost of energy. We’ll stage vigorous performances on stage.”

Before the interview was over, we asked Girls’ Generation about their wishes. Youn-a says her wish is to be healthy and be able to smile happily with her loved ones. Hyo-yeon and Soo-young say they want to meet their significant others and get married, while Yoo-ri says her wish is to see Girls’ Generation remain popular for a long time. The youngest member, Seo-hyun, says she wants to become more mature because she is too dependent now as the only child in her family

Posted in 4minute, korean pop with tags , , , on June 19, 2009 by gebens2001

e090619_01Five members of the new female group 4minute say that they’re not worried about competing against another recently-debuted girl band 2NE1.

After performing the group’s debut song, “Hot Issue,” in a cable music program, 4minute members said that they admire 2NE1 and it’s an honor for them to stand on the same stage with them. However, they don’t think 2NE1 as their rivals, because their music styles are totally different. The leader of 4minute, Nam Ji-hyun, said that each member of the group has a very distinct personality, which is incorporated into the songs. She told the reporters to look forward to their performances.

4minute made its debut on Thursday’s “M Countdown.” Their network appearance will begin with “Music Bank” on Saturday, followed by “Show! Music Center” on MBC and “Hot Pop Songs” on SBS

“Wonder Girls Drop Out of High School”

Posted in Wonder Girls, korean pop with tags , , on June 15, 2009 by gebens2001

e090615_01So-hee and Sun-mi, two teenage members of Wonder Girls, have dropped out of high school to focus on their careers in America. The girls’ representative at JYP Entertainment admitted that the two girls voluntarily left school a while ago. They were both born in 1992.

According to their agency, So-hee and Sun-mi thought long and hard about dropping out of school with their families before making their final decision. They could have stayed in school if they were working only in Korea, but their overseas career necessitated a long absence from school, compelling them to stop their studies.

Meanwhile, Wonder Girls plans to release a single album for the first time in the United States on June 27th. The songs in the album are the English versions of their biggest hits, “Nobody” and “Tell Me.” The girls will also open the concerts for American pop idol Jonas Brothers from June 27 through mid-August. The first regular album of Wonder Girls in  America will roll out sometimes in ! September or October of this year.
